On 27 February 2026, we were honoured to participate in a special presentation at Gibraltar Barracks near Camberley. Taxi Charity volunteer drivers, Dean Euesden and Dave Hemstead, had the privilege of accompanying Afghanistan veteran Matt Weston and Chelsea Pensioners Clifford Belsey and Alan Clarke to the Royal Engineers' base.
During the visit, stable belts were presented to the Sappers as they prepare to move on to their respective regiments for further training. The stable belt carries a rich military history, originating from the days when cavalrymen would move their buckles to the side to avoid catching them while cleaning stables and tending to their horses. Today, it remains a proud symbol of identity within the British Army.
The day was marked not only by ceremony but also by inspiration, thanks to Matt who spoke to the Sappers about his journey.
Matt, who served in bomb disposal, shared his story with the soldiers. He told them how a tragic incident left him a triple amputee at aged 20 and spoke movingly about his rehabilitation, the challenges he faced in finding work and the resilience required to overcome adversity. His message resonated deeply with the soldiers, emphasising that adapting and persevering is a daily part of life in the military - a lesson they will carry forward in their own training and careers.
The trip was a reminder of the power of resilience, the value of support networks and the inspiration that comes from hearing stories of courage firsthand. For Matt Weston, the soldiers, and the London cabbies, it was a day that highlighted how determination and solidarity can help overcome even the most formidable challenges.
