On Sunday 6 November 2016, 'Return Of The Liberators', the documentary made by Janet Hodgson, our filmmaker-in-residence, will receive its official premiere.
The screening will be followed by a sing-song around the piano with World War II veterans at the Kino Teatr, 43-53 Norman Road, St. Leonards-on-sea, TN38 0EQ.
The event, which starts at 5pm, is part of the Economic and Social Research Council’s (ESRC) Festival of Social Science.
'Return Of The Liberators' is a heart-warming documentary that captures the antics, camaraderie and acts of remembrance of our veterans' trip to The Netherlands in 2015.
Filmmaker Janet Hodgson has been working with the Taxi Charity for several years, documenting our work and organising musical events with the veterans.
She accompanied the charity and over 160 veterans and their friends and carers, with a small film crew, in a convoy of 80+ London black cabs to Arnhem in 2015, where the veterans took part in commemorations for the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands.
The film explores remembrance from several different perspectives – cultural, personal and public – and includes music performed by the veterans themselves. It was produced in collaboration with Creation Company Pictures and Hogarth and Ogilvy.
After the screening, Janet and St. Leonards-based pianist Robert Connelly will be joined around the piano with some honoured guests – some of the veterans and cabbies who appear in the film - for some good old-fashioned wartime songs and Cockney favourites. 1940s fancy dress is optional!
The veterans will be transported to the Kino Teatr by volunteer drivers from the Taxi Charity.
The event includes a pre-screening talk by anthropologist Gemma Aellah and a Q&A with filmmaker, Janet Hodgson.
Tickets are free, but booking is essential via the Kino Teatr box office: http://bit.ly/ActofRem
